Introduction
Our mobile devices have become essential companions in our daily lives and store valuable information. Unfortunately, this convenience also makes them an attractive target for malicious actors.
Malware can infiltrate your phone, potentially stealing your sensitive data, compromising your privacy, and even taking control of your device. This can lead to financial loss, identity theft, and other serious consequences.
Identifying Malware on Your Phone
- Battery Drain: Your phone’s battery is draining much faster than usual, even when it’s not in use.
- Data Overage: You’re exceeding your data limit unexpectedly, despite minimal online activity.
- Performance Issues: Your phone is running slower, crashing frequently, or apps are unresponsive.
- Pop-ups or Ads: Getting bombarded with annoying pop-ups or ads, even when you’re not accessing the web.
- Unusual Apps: Presence of unfamiliar apps or features can happen when you install an app from untrusted sources. Also, note if there are changes to some settings that you did not change.
Best Practices to Prevent Malware
- Stay Up-to-Date: Update your operating system and applications regularly to patch known vulnerabilities.
- Use Antivirus: Employ a reputable mobile antivirus solution and ensure it’s always up-to-date.
- Download Wisely: Source apps only from trusted marketplaces like official app stores to minimise the risk of malware infiltration, avoid downloading files, and opening texts and attachments from unknown accounts.
- Phishing: Be vigilant against suspicious emails, texts, or calls that request personal information.
- Account Security: Create strong, unique passwords for each account, avoid sharing them, and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to add an extra security layer.
- Public Wi-Fi: Refrain from sensitive activities on public Wi-Fi networks. If necessary, use a VPN to encrypt data sent over the network.
- Compromised Websites: Visit only secure and trusted websites. Avoid spurious websites that could infect your phone.
