Disaster Recovery Plan: Minimising Downtime and Maximising Business Resilience

A Disaster Recovery Plan (DRP) is a plan that ensures your organisation restores access and
functionality to IT infrastructure after a disaster, whether natural or man-made (human action
or error). Disasters that interrupt service and cause data loss can happen anytime without
warning hence the need for a plan to minimize downtime.

Disaster Recovery Controls

  • Preventive Control:
This control uses tools and techniques to prevent the disaster from
occurring. This may include backing up data and continuously monitoring your workload
environment for configuration errors and policy compliance.
  • Detective Control:
This measure discovers unwanted events and uncovers new potential
threats. This will help you know when a response is necessary.
  • Corrective Control:
this control restores data and systems after a disaster or an event. This
includes planning for potential disaster recovery scenarios, ensuring backup operations to
reduce impact, and putting recovery procedures into action.

Key Components of A Disaster Recovery Plan

  • Risk Assessment:
Identify potential threats and their possible impact on your business
  • Business Impact Analysis:
your critical business functions and their recovery priorities.
  • Backup and Recovery:
define how your data will be backed-up, stored and restored
  • Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Point Objective (RPO):
Set targets on how quickly systems must be restored and how much data loss is acceptable
  • Communication Plan:
Establishing clear communication channels and procedures for informing stakeholders.
  • Incident Response Plan:
Outline the steps to take in the event of an incident.
  • Testing and Training:
Regularly testing the disaster recovery plan and training staff on their roles and responsibilities

Organisations with robust and well-tested disaster recovery strategies can minimize downtime,
achieve faster recovery times, and maximize business resilience.
