Introduction
With the widespread use of mobile devices for work, they have become prime targets for cyberattacks. High-profile breaches like in the 2019 U.S. defense contractor experienced a data breach after an employee’s unprotected mobile device was lost, exposing sensitive military data.
Additionally, managing multiple mobile devices within an organisation can be complex. In 2018, an employee at Boeing lost a laptop containing sensitive employee data. The device lacked proper encryption and remote wipe capabilities, leading to a data breach affecting over 36,000 individuals.
Best Practices to Protect the Devices in your Organisation
- Implement Passwords or Biometrics: Ensure all devices are protected by strong passwords or biometric methods such as fingerprints or facial recognition.
- Set Automatic Lock Screens: Devices should automatically lock after a short period of inactivity to prevent unauthorised access.
- Use Mobile Device Management (MDM) to Control Access: Enroll corporate devices in an MDM solution for centralized control, app restrictions, and encryption enforcement.
- Monitor Installed Applications: Restrict unverified apps (malware vectors) and ensure only trusted apps are installed.
- Enable Full Device Encryption: Encrypt all work-related data on mobile devices, making it unreadable without authentication.
- Use Encrypted Communication Tools: Share sensitive information via encrypted messaging platforms to prevent interception.
- Disable Auto-Connect to Public Networks: Configure devices to manually connect to networks instead of auto-joining unsafe public Wi-Fi.
- Use VPNs (Virtual Private Networks): Require VPN usage on public/unsecured Wi-Fi to encrypt transmitted data and protect company information.
