Introduction
Cryptocurrency scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated. These scams often involve fraudulent investment opportunities, fake cryptocurrency exchanges, and phishing attacks. For instance, in early 2024, a phishing attack on the MailerLite platform resulted in over $700,000 in cryptocurrency thefts.
Attackers infiltrated the admin panel and sent phishing emails impersonating legitimate crypto firms, tricking users into connecting their wallets to malicious sites designed to drain funds.
Additionally, in 2024, scammers promoted a fake AI-powered trading bot, falsely promising high returns on cryptocurrency investments. The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) warned about these fraudulent schemes, which used fabricated endorsements and results to lure unsuspecting investors.
Common Tactics Used in Cryptocurrency Scams
- Ponzi Schemes: Promise high returns with little or no risk, relying on new investors to pay off existing ones.
- Pump and Dump Schemes: Artificially inflate cryptocurrency prices before selling holdings and causing a crash.
- Social Engineering: Use psychological manipulation to extract personal information or influence financial decisions.
- Phishing: Send fraudulent emails/messages mimicking legitimate sources to trick users into clicking malicious links.
Protecting Yourself from Cryptocurrency Scams
- Research: Verify legitimacy of exchanges and investments; avoid guarantees of low-risk/high-return offers.
- Be Cautious of Online Interactions: Avoid suspicious links/attachments; verify sender identities; never share personal/financial details.
- Use Strong Security Measures: Enable MFA, use unique passwords, secure passphrases, and update software/devices.
- Trusted Sources: Download crypto wallets/software only from verified platforms.
- Invest Wisely: Only invest affordable amounts, diversify portfolios, and consult financial advisors.
- Report Scams: Contact law enforcement and financial institutions if targeted by scams.
