Protecting Your Digital Identity

Introduction

Identity theft, fraud, privacy issues, and data breaches are threats associated with digital identity. Digital identity includes one or a combination of usernames, passwords, biometric data, online behaviour patterns, social media profiles, IP addresses, and more, which have become indispensable for authentication, personalisation of services, financial transactions, and interactions across all platforms.

It is important to understand how to secure your digital identity. This advisory offers considerations to safeguard your digital identities and stay secure in our connected world.

Best Practices

  • Personal Information: Limit personal information sharing online, especially on social media platforms, and avoid suspicious links or sharing sensitive information in response to unsolicited emails or messages.
  • Social Engineering: Always verify the identity of anyone requesting sensitive information by contacting them through other established channels.
  • Identity Protection Services: Consider using identity protection services that monitor your personal information online and alert you to potential risks.
  • Multifactor Authentication (MFA): Activate MFA on all accounts when possible. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring additional forms of verification.
  • Passwords: Create complex passwords using a mix of upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols; avoid easily guessable information like birthdays or common words; and use different passwords across all accounts to minimise the risk if one is compromised.
  • Privacy Settings: Review and adjust privacy settings on all social media accounts and online platforms.
  • Secure Networks: Use a VPN while using public networks and avoid public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions.
  • Third-party Apps: Allow only trusted applications available from official app stores (Google Play, Apple App Store, Windows App Store) and check app permissions regularly.
  • Secure Browser: Use privacy-focused browsers, and clear cookies and browsing history regularly.
  • Antimalware: Install antimalware from a reputable source on your phone.
  • Updates: Ensure all apps and operating systems are up to date with the latest security patches and updates.
