Introduction
Messaging apps like WhatsApp, Twitter, and Messenger have become essential for communication. While these platforms offer convenience, they also present cybersecurity risks. Recent breaches, such as the Facebook Messenger data leak in 2023 and the WhatsApp spy mod attack in 2023, underscore the importance of safeguarding our online conversations.
How to Identify a Compromised Social Media Account
- Activity: Unusual posts, messages, or friend requests.
- Login Issues: Trouble logging into your account.
- Notifications: Unauthorised notifications like password reset or log in from another location/device.
- Charges: Unauthorised charges/deductions on linked payment accounts.
- Links or Attachments: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments.
Best Practices For Securing Private Messages
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring authentication via SMS or authenticator app in addition to your password when logging in.
- Unique Passwords: Use strong, unique passwords with a mix of uppercase/lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid guessable information like dictionary words or birthdays; use a password manager to store and generate complex passwords.
- Beware of Phishing Attempts: Avoid clicking suspicious links/attachments from unknown senders; verify sender identities before sharing personal information.
- Review Privacy Settings: Regularly restrict who can see your profile, status updates, and message history.
- Be Mindful of Public Groups: Avoid sharing sensitive information in public groups where messages can be viewed/shared by anyone.
- Backups: Take regular backups to recover data in case of stolen/lost devices or resets.
