How to Identify a Compromised Social Media Account
- Activity: Unusual posts, messages, or friend requests.
- Login Issues: Trouble logging into your account.
- Notifications: Unauthorised notifications like password reset or log in from another location/device.
- Charges: Unauthorised charges/deductions on linked payment accounts.
- Links or Attachments: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or downloading attachments.
Best Practices For Securing Private Messages
- Enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): MFA adds an extra layer of security by requiring authentication via SMS or authenticator app in addition to your password when logging in.
- Unique Passwords: Use strong, unique passwords with a mix of uppercase/lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid guessable information like dictionary words or birthdays; use a password manager to store and generate complex passwords.
- Beware of Phishing Attempts: Avoid clicking suspicious links/attachments from unknown senders; verify sender identities before sharing personal information.
- Review Privacy Settings: Regularly restrict who can see your profile, status updates, and message history.
- Be Mindful of Public Groups: Avoid sharing sensitive information in public groups where messages can be viewed/shared by anyone.
